The quay district

Project support – showcasing the attractions of Salzburg

On Friday, February 21, 2003, the scene was nothing short of breathtaking when the quay district in the old town quarter of Salzburg was bathed in a totally new and warm light during the first trial illumination.

120 spotlights lent the mainly Baroque buildings a unique flair and transformed the narrow alleys and old houses into an illuminated work of art.

As was the case in Hamburg's „Speicherstadt” district, the project was supported by the „Lebendige Stadt” Foundation and the Philips company.

Following the successful trial illumination, the Kajetanerkirche church, the Schanzlpark, the Papagenoplatz square, the Pfeifergasse alley, the „Stein- und Michaelitor” gate and the portal of the historic Chiemseehof residence have literally been "shown in their best light" since 2004. The new light installations not only enhance the appeal of the unique monuments and buildings that form part of the World Heritage site but also ensure that local people and visitors feel safe and secure in the district. In coming years, plans will be implemented to permanently illuminate large sections of Salzburg's „Altstadt” old town quarter.
