"Public Space - Public Relations: large-format advertising in public spaces"

Since the mid-1990s, we have seen a steady increase in large-format advertising in public spaces in the big cities: whether it be the packaged Brandenburg Gate, the Berlin Television Tower as a football or giant logos on building scaffoldings - the branding strategies of today's companies continue to take over the public arena, driving the presence and dominance of their brands.

How should the cities respond to this new challenge? What alternatives are there and what tools and instruments can the cities draw on to control and manage this process? And what are the real-world experiences of the cities and the advertising industry with the various strategies?

On November 17, 2009 the "Lebendige Stadt" Foundation staged a "know-how forum" at the "Römer" venue in Frankfurt where experts had an opportunity to discuss these issues as well as to exchange ideas and generate fresh stimuli for future concepts.

Around 100 decision-makers from cities and municipalities came to the event to find out about new ideas.
