Know-How-Transfer

Once a year, the Foundation organises a symposium focusing on topical issues relating to the cities. Future issues, approaches to solving current problems, and the result of the surveys conducted by the Foundation are discussed by representatives from the worlds of culture, politics, business and society. These fruitful discussions are made available to a wide specialist readership through the “Lebendige Stadt” journal.

Congress 2008

In the nonprofit "Lebendige Stadt" Foundation, state minister presidents, government ministers, lord mayors, CEOs, scientists and leading cultural figures work together to maintain and promote the vibrancy of European cities. As part of this endeavor, the Foundation supports "best practice" models, presents an annual Foundation Award and organizes forums for the exchange of ideas and experience between the involved parties. The well-known projects of the Foundation include the illumination of the Rhine bank in Cologne, the revitalization of Hamburg's "Jungfernstieg" boulevard and the redevelopment of the church courtyard of the Nikolaikirche in Leipzig.

The conference will be staged in cooperation with the German Association of Towns and Municipalities.

The 2nd report of the UN Climate Panel predicts the effects of the way we live today on the world of the future. There is no comparable initiative that has generated as much attention either in Germany or worldwide. Some of the current strategies in the area of environmental and energy policy need to be totally revised and rethought in relation to the prospering economies in today's world. Cities emit around 80 percent of the greenhouse gases that affect our climate but cover just 0.4 percent of the earth's surface. At the same time, the impact of global warming is particularly noticeable in the cities. What can big, mid-sized and small towns and cities do to promote climate protection? How can they maintain or even improve the standard of living and quality of life at the same time? And how should the cities prepare themselves for the already inevitable consequences of climate change?

Green spaces have always shaped the quality of life in and the image of the cities. What would Munich be without the English Garden or New York without Central Park? Urban green spaces are increasingly also becoming a strategic factor in the field of urban development and a key locational factor for tourism, residential decisions and business. Moreover, public green spaces also play an important social role – depending on their layout and concept, green spaces can either promote communication and cohesion or they can even become trouble spots. How does urban development geared towards strategic "green planning" work? How can cities use green spaces to make themselves more attractive? How can green spaces be successfully developed in problem areas? Do urban green spaces pay for themselves or are they above all a cost factor?

The term "quality of life" comprises all those factors that go together to make up the conditions under which society as a whole and the individual live. The WHO describes "quality of life" as the physical, mental and social well-being of the individual. An intact environment, sufficient employment opportunities, adequate living space, a varied range of leisure facilities, the necessary social and cultural infrastructure – all these factors influence the quality of life of the individual. What can the cities do to maintain and improve the quality life of the individual and the community in the city in the long term? What are the key "parameters" of quality of life in the cities? How does climate protection affect quality of life? Is the individual also willing to accept limitations to his or her quality of life in order to spare resources?
