Projects
Following an evaluation of its activities to date, the Foundation is committed to bringing a sharper focus to its support and promotion activities in public urban spaces. These activities can be assigned to the individual core themes of the Foundation – light, green or developed space - or simultaneously to more than one of these themes.
A City Worth Living In
Deutsche Umwelthilfe and the “Lebendige Stadt” Foundation called on cities and communities to enter the “City Worth Living In – Nature and Urban Life in Harmony” competition.
The organizations sought creative urban development projects that cultivate green spaces in the city and actively involve its inhabitants.

Nature is crucial to the quality of our surroundings and our lives in our cities and communities. Green urban spaces offer city dwellers room to play, exercise, and relax, and play an important role in making homes and workplaces worth living in. At the same time, green spaces provide a habitat for a wealth of animal and plant species. Urban protection of nature and its species need not conflict with our home and work lives or our leisure pursuits. On the contrary, green urban spaces represent a key factor in our choice of location.
Of the 160 projects submitted, six winning projects were selected for awards. The city of Andernach, with its “Essbare Stadt” (“Edible City”) project, was chosen as the overall winner among the top six municipalities. In the project, Andernach turned its parks into walk-in gardens, adding tasty and pretty vegetable species to the green spaces. The first prize was €30,000 from the Lebendige Stadt” Foundation.
