The Most Sustainable Neighborhoods and Buildings: intelligent – innovative – affordable"

Foundation Award 2026

By 2050, the building stock in the European Union is expected to be nearly climate-neutral. Currently, however, the building sector in the EU accounts for approximately 36 percent of all CO₂ emissions. Sustainable construction is therefore a key lever for a future-proof and climate-resilient development of our cities and municipalities. Along the way, there have been numerous debates and proposals, often requiring substantial financial investment, raising questions about the distribution of burdens and efficiency.

The Foundation’s goal is to promote projects that can serve as role models for other cities and municipalities.

Against this backdrop, the “Lebendige Stadt” Foundation is seeking neighborhoods and buildings that serve as best-practice examples of sustainable construction, characterized by intelligent planning, innovative solutions, and affordable concepts. The focus is on low-emission, energy-efficient, renewable energy–powered, and economically viable buildings and neighborhoods, whether developed by private or public developers or existing property owners. The Foundation aims to evaluate flagship projects according to ESG criteria, separately for public and private buildings

A total prize sum of €30,000 is available.
